First Life: She was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru. Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad. She had a lonely childhood. Because her father and mother also involved in Politics. Her father has involved Indian Independent movement. She had limited contact with her father. She grew up with her mother, Kamala Nehru. Her first learning at home with her home tutors. After that, she was got admission to Modern school in Delhi. In 1937, studied college history at Somerville, Oxford. In March 1942, Indira married Feroze Gandhi(unrelated to Mahatma Gandhi).
Political Career: In 1955, She was elected as a member of the Congress Working Committee. In 1956, she was appointed as the President of the All India Youth Congress Committee. In 1958, she was elected a member of the Central Parliamentary Board of the Congress. In 1959, she was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress Party. She held the post for the next year. She served as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the Central Government from 1964-1966.
In the 1967 elections, the Indian National Congress (INC) won the election to the Indian Parliament. The INC Party won 40.74% of the national vote. And the number of seats was 283. Indira Gandhi was elected as the Prime Minister of India. She was the Prime Minister of the country from January 1967 to March 1977.
In the 1971 elections, the ruling INC Party won the election to the Indian Parliament. The INC Party won 43.68% of the national vote. The number of seats was 352. And Indira Gandhi again elected as the Prime Minister of India. India won the third Indo-Pakistani war in 1971 under her strong leadership. Her contribution to the liberation war of Bangladesh will be written in golden letters in history.
In the 1980 elections, the Indian National Congress won 224 seats. In this election, they got 41.75% votes. On the other hand, the Janata Party got 18% votes as their nearest rival. In this election, Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister again.
Death: In 1984, the Sikh extremists wanted an autonomous state. In June 1984, on the orders of Indira Gandhi, the Indian Army raided the Sikh Holy Golden Temple. Known as Operation Blue Star. In this Operation, hundreds of Sikhs were killed. The incident sparked outrage among the Sikh community. On October 31, 1984, her bodyguard shot and killed him.
